Galway Rock Vineyard and Winery
Falling Rock Red Blend
Galway Rock Vineyard and Winery is a small, family-owned winery located in the Adirondack Foothills in Upstate NY. They are especially unique because in addition to making their wines by hand, they also grow all of their grapes. The eastern side of Upstate NY is not known for its ability to grow vitis vinifera. In fact, it is relatively notorious for being quite unfriendly to wine grapes. It's so notorious, that most other wineries in the area opt to source their grapes from other wine regions across the state (or across the country).
We tasted their Falling Rock, a semi-sweet red blend.
Visually, this wine is quite inviting. A beautiful deep magenta hue at the core gives way to a translucent cherry rim.
On the nose, Falling Rock is very floral. Aromas of rose petals and orange blossoms mingle with gentle undertones of twigs and black pepper. After several swirls, more defined notes of dried berries rise from the glass.
The floral notes carry through to the palate, where they are joined with prominent flavors of cherries, cranberries, and blueberries. The light bodied, semi-sweet style is nicely balanced with medium plus acidity levels and mild tannins. Served with a slight chill, this wine quickly becomes a porch pounder!
The aromas and flavors not only go together nicely, they also do not compete, which makes it a great wine for pairing with different foods. And, with its light tannic structure and mild sweetness, it will also appeal to a wide range of people with varying preferences. All of these factors add up to making Falling Rock an excellent wine to pair with Thanksgiving dinner. Just drinking it makes me crave turkey and stuffing!
